In the nitrogen cycle in the savanna biome, soil is turned into fuel. When the soil is burned, it is turned into carbon in the air. The carbon goes through photosynthesis into shrubs. The shrubs are eaten by elephants, the elephants decomposed by fungi that goes into the soil, starting the cycle over again.

Without this cycle, carbon matter would remain in the air and kill all animals. The way matter flows and energy flows in a biome is different. Energy is a one way flow, while matter cycles.
